The moments of "light"

1. “no sunlight at all”

Shallow Meaning:
    The trees were so giant that they blocked much sunlight.

Significance:
    The place was not relaxing. It implies the dark background of War and creates a sullen atmosphere. And it paves the death of Lemon.



2. "Lemon step from the shade into bright sunlight", "the sunlight came around him", "the sunlight on Lemon’s face"

Shallow Meaning:
    Lemon moved out of the shade into the sunlight. And it is the prelude of Lemon's death.

Significance:
    Use relaxing words to describe a  sad thing and make the environment peaceful and still. First, it means that Lemon was going to the heaven. He was only a kid and needed protection against the war. Next, it also shows that the war makes people numb about death. They got used to it. The war actually deprived people of their various emotions.



3. "how peaceful the twilight was"

Shallow Meaning:
    When Sanders was telling the story, it was at dusk. 

Significance:
    Shows the peaceful and sullen atmosphere. Twilight gives people reverie. It implies the patrol's strange experience.



4. "just a light bubbling sound"

Shallow Meaning:
    The baby water buffalo's nose was shot. And it was almost at the last gasp. 

Significance:
    Shows the buffalo's tenacious vitality. First, the buffalo was innocent for the war. And Rat was just a kid, not so violent indeed. The war can make people crazy and harm innocent people. The war just produced violence and cruelty. Second, the opposite side of things always stay with each other. Compared with the violence, the buffalo's tenacious vitality is shown to people. People may get moved and retrieve their hope.
